The colours, textures and melting quality of a fresh ice cream is particularly exciting to capture in paint, although I am equally attracted to the solid, static plastic ice creams used to advertise ice cream parlours by the seaside, as well as the use of ice creams in poster advertising. These different inspirations require a different approach and painting technique. I often use a palette knife to recreate the lush swirls and texture of a real ice cream, whereas detailed draughtsmanship and brush work is needed to replicate poster advertising or the solidity of a plastic advertising cone...”
